although afaik that's not entirely true, there's still money in licensing whether it's for movies/tv shows or video games (of course, that requires the artists to have at least a certain amount of popularity to be considered to begin with).

As far as I know, some beginners can also try to sell it on iTunes. I wish I could make songs to earn some money.
